NEWS FLASH: Quilters about to take over Manhattan!

You heard it here, well maybe not first – but you heard it here.  Quilters are going to make their annual fall migration to the grand Island of Manhattan.  Some may be flying south, but there are a lot who are coming flying North, West and East. And they will all land at the at FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) for this annual fall ritual which is know as QUILTERS TAKE MANHATTAN.

Quilt Alliance is a nonprofit 501c3 organization established in 1993 with a mission to document, preserve, and share our American quilt heritage by collecting the rich stories that historic and contemporary quilts, and their makers, tell about our nation’s diverse peoples and their communities.

In support of this mission, the Alliance brings together quilt makers and designers, the quilt industry, quilt scholars and teachers, and quilt collectors to further the following goals:

  • to promote the understanding of the quilt as an important American grassroots art form
  • to share stories and documentation about quilts with a broad public
  • to educate Americans about the importance of documenting quilts and quiltmakers so that their stories will not be lost

It is a wonderful organization that does wonderful work  – consider becoming a member.

This event is one of the main fund raisers for the alliance.  So what happens at QTM (Quilters take Manhattan).  Well on Friday and Sunday there are a lot of fun tours and events you can take part in. If you are in the NYC area – check out the Quilt Alliance website – there are still some tickets left for some of the Friday events.  Here are some shots from a tour of the garment center I took a few years ago.  We visited a number of fabric stores and also this wonderful company that makes silk flowers – the mold and create them by hand!  Yes they do!

Saturday is the big event day at FIT – unfortunately all those tickets are GONE!  Last year Ricky Tims gave a wonderful presentation.  This year there will be some great talks by Kaffe Fassett,Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi and all led by emcee Mary Fons!

Also – a not to be missed event is the Quilt Match Challenge  Three quilters square off against one another to create a quilt top (not sewn) in about 30 minutes.  The fabric flies – rotary cutters cut and the fun happens.  I was one of the participants a few years ago. Alas, I did not win, but I did have great time and made some great friends in the process.  Here is the winner from that year – Allison Aller – being presented with her winning belt by Mark Lapinski and Meg Cox.
